What We're Looking For 

We’re looking to expand our team, and that’s where you come in…

As a key early hire in our development team your focus will be on leading the web app software development aspect of Earth Blox. You will be responsible for designing and building new features, squashing bugs, cleaning up our code architecture, and as a senior member of the team we will expect you to contribute to the great team environment we have. You won’t have official line management duties, but as a small team with a few junior developers and occasional interns, the ambition is that you can help us out with supporting them and undertaking a mentor-like role. There will also be opportunities, if you’re interested, for you to get involved in the data science and Earth observation side of things. Where we are doing exciting things with satellite data; developing algorithms, exploring the benefits that AI and Machine Learning methods could bring to our customers, and helping people to improve the way the planet and its resources are cared for.

Some skills and experience you will need:
  • Experience frontend web development using component based frameworks such as Vue.js, Angular.js, React.js etc.

  • Experience web frontend technologies HTML5, CSS3, ES6, Material design.

  • Experience developing enterprise-grade web applications.

  • Demonstrable capacity to work in a team.

  • You must have the existing right to live and work in the UK, unfortunately we are not able to sponsor anybody.

Some skills and experience you may have (we’re not strict here):

  • A minimum of 3-5 years experience in software development.

  • A formal education in Computer Science or Computer Engineering, or equivalent.

  • Vue.js, Vue-Material, Vuelidate.

  • Backend development experience using Node.js. Express. Python (Django, Tornado, webapp2), SQL, No-SQL

  • Jest. Mocha.

  • Python.

  • Google Earth Engine.

  • Google App Engine / Google Cloud.

  • Firebase Auth, Firebase Firestore DB, Firebase Storage.

  • Google Cloud Functions.

  • Experience using payment platforms such as Paypal, Stripe etc. to create Billing and subscription.

  • You are pragmatic and don't overdo on abstraction, testing, and processes, but you understand the value and trade-offs.

  • You are detail oriented, have great empathy for our end-users, and understand the value of good interaction patterns and design.

Earth Blox is the trading name for Quosient Ltd. 

Quosient was founded in 2019 by Genevieve Patenaude (CEO), Sam Fleming and Iain Woodhouse. The team has previously been involved in other start-ups in the Scottish Space and Satellite sector. 

Our mission is to democratise access to Earth Observation data. With its unique, easy-to-use interface, Earth Blox simplifies access to terabytes of global satellite data, for decision-makers in every sector. Satellites and planetary-scale data are available at unprecedented rates of acquisition for deforestation, urban expansion and large-scale disasters mapping. Environmental consultancies, supply-chain managers, insurers, retail and decision- makers in public institutions want to access this information yet are hindered by the complexity, cost and skill levels required to exploit the data. Earth Blox removes these barriers: its patent pending innovation lies in the complete removal of coding skills, making space data accessible to the masses, globally.

How We Work

We're a small, close-knit team that moves quickly. The nature of the work that we do is bringing together the different worlds of web app software development with the data science of satellite earth observation. This means that there is a degree of experimentation towards our success, and we get there as a team. It’s a highly collaborative effort, with everyone having a voice that’s heard. Our developers are as comfortable having product vision discussions as they are diving into code.

Our development team is drawn from a range of backgrounds that reflects the diversity of our work. This means that our developers can get involved in all aspects of our work from delivering new features for our customers to helping come up with ideas that moves Earth Blox forward.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we are working remotely from home (or in the garden if the weather is nice). The health and safety of our team is our top priority so we do not anticipate returning to an office setting in the short term future. Any planned move into an office would be done with full consultation of the whole team; nobody will be compelled to work in an office until they feel safe doing so.

However there are draw backs to being unable to work in an office setting, and we have put in place processes to help mitigate. We have twice weekly full team meetings, the development team meeting daily, we have a team group chats, and new staff are designated a buddy to help them find their feet in their first few weeks.
